Cyprus Government remains silent over sky-high charges at Larnaca airport

Cyprus Government remains silent over sky-high charges at Larnaca airport

IACA (The International Air Carrier Association) notes that Mr. Nicolaides, Minister of Communications and Works visited the new Larnaca airport on 14 December and promised to start an investigation into the Larnaca airport fee system.

IACA has repeatedly stated that, while the building of the new infrastructure is welcomed by the airlines, the cost of the new airport, which is being passed through to the airlines, and the increased cost of service provision combined together are unaffordable for many of the carriers, in the current harsh economic climate.

Moreover the 33% Government concession fee on Hermes Airports revenue is significantly adding to the overall cost.

IACA member airlines represent the largest user of the airport yet they are denied any explanation from the Government and Hermes Airports in relation to the sky-high airport fees. Luc Geens, IACA Manager Ground Operations, said: “IACA has been now waiting for more than six weeks to receive a reply to its letter addressed to the Minister questioning the airport fees which makes Larnaca one of the most expensive airports in Europe.” He further said: “airlines deserve to be treated as respected customers and as key partners of Cyprus tourism development and economy.”

Luc Geens further comments: “Nor Hermes airport, nor the Government consulted the airlines on the introduction of new fees which, if not reduced drastically will further deter the carriers of using Cyprus as a destination. The airlines are still prepared to constructively work together with the authorities, but legitimately expect an invitation to open a dialogue.”
